South Africa Reverses Decision, Allows Entry of 130 Palestinians After Humanitarian Intervention

South African border authorities have granted entry to 130 Palestinians who arrived from Kenya at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, after they were initially denied entry for not meeting immigration requirements.
According to the border administration, 153 Palestinians arrived on a charter flight operated by Global Airways, but their travel documents lacked exit stamps indicating their departure airport, and they did not specify the duration of their stay or their destination in South Africa. Commissioner Michael Masiabato stated that the travelers "did not pass the immigration test, and none expressed a desire to apply for asylum, which led to their initial rejection."
However, the Ministry of Home Affairs reversed its decision on Wednesday evening after receiving correspondence from the humanitarian organization Gift of the Givers, which committed to providing accommodation for the Palestinians during their stay.
Prior to the new approval, 23 travelers had already departed for other destinations, while the remaining individuals were allowed entry under the organization's care.
Gift of the Givers confirmed that Palestinians can enter South Africa without a visa for up to 90 days, provided they meet basic entry requirements.
South Africa has taken a firm stance in support of the Palestinian cause and filed a case with the International Court of Justice in 2023, accusing Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza, a claim that has been rejected by Tel Aviv.
