Brazil's Supreme Court Upholds 27-Year Prison Sentence for Bolsonaro Over Coup Conspiracy

Brazil's Supreme Court has dismissed former President Jair Bolsonaro's appeal against a 27-year prison sentence related to his role in planning a coup attempt. This ruling effectively eliminates most of his legal avenues to avoid incarceration.
The majority of justices voted last week to reject the defense's appeal, with the official confirmation of the decision occurring on Friday. According to prosecutors, the alleged plot included plans to assassinate current President Lula da Silva and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, though senior military leaders did not support these actions.
A judicial source indicated that the court's decision will be officially published on Monday, after which Bolsonaro's defense team will have five days to submit a final request. However, this request is expected to be swiftly denied by Justice de Moraes, closing the legal pathway for the case entirely.
