Nigeria's national team secured a spot in the final of the African qualifying playoff for the 2026 World Cup after a decisive 4-1 victory over Gabón in a semifinal match held in Morocco.
Despite a balanced start and solid defensive performances from both teams in the first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 78th minute with a goal from forward Akor Adams. Gabón quickly responded, equalizing in the 89th minute with a goal from Mario Lemina, which sent the match into extra time.
In the extra period, Nigeria showcased their physical dominance, with Sidra Edjoké scoring the second goal in the 97th minute. Star striker Victor Osimhen then added two more goals in the 102nd and 110th minutes, securing Nigeria's place in the final.
Nigeria will face the winner of the match between Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to determine their opponent in the playoff final. The winner of that match will secure the tenth African spot in the last qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
