Hamas Leader Discusses Humanitarian Crisis and Future Negotiations in Gaza

Hamas leader Khaled Mashal stated that Palestinians in Gaza continue to face severe humanitarian challenges two years after the conflict, asserting that the end of military operations does not equate to the end of suffering due to ongoing violations and slow recovery efforts.

These comments were made during Mashal's participation in the 17th Al Jazeera Forum in Doha, titled "The Palestinian Cause and Regional Balances." He called for immediate humanitarian assistance, including relief and shelter, to help residents restore normalcy in their lives.

Complex Issues Ahead

Mashal noted that upcoming discussions will address several critical issues, such as disarmament, the involvement of international forces, future governance of Gaza, and the withdrawal of Israeli troops. He indicated that Hamas and other Palestinian factions are collaborating to develop a unified political strategy aimed at resolving these matters and achieving stability in the region.

Political Recognition is Not Enough

Mashal remarked that recent developments have brought the Palestinian state issue back into international focus. However, he emphasized that mere political recognition is insufficient unless it leads to tangible actions that end the occupation and tackle the underlying causes of the conflict. He stressed that the core of the crisis is the ongoing occupation, and any political solution must begin from this understanding to achieve a comprehensive and lasting resolution.

Hamas's Position on Disarmament

Regarding the disarmament of Palestinian factions, Mashal argued that proposals for disarmament while the occupation persists are attempts to undermine the Palestinian people. He asserted that resistance is a legitimate right for those living under occupation, as supported by historical precedents. He mentioned that discussions on this topic have involved regional mediators, including Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt, as well as indirect communications with the United States through mediation channels.

International Proposals for Stability

Mashal revealed that mediators have shown an understanding of Hamas's stance on weapons, suggesting alternatives that focus on providing security guarantees instead of applying political pressure. Among the proposals discussed are the deployment of international peacekeeping forces along borders and the establishment of a long-term ceasefire lasting between five to ten years, aimed at stabilizing the region and preventing renewed conflicts.

Accusations Against Israel

Mashal accused Israel of attempting to disarm Palestinians, arguing that the fundamental issue lies not in the guarantees provided by Palestinian factions but in Israeli policies that aim to create disorder within the Palestinian community.

Call for Balanced International Action

In conclusion, Mashal urged for a more impartial international approach to the Palestinian issue, calling on the United States and European nations to address the root causes of the conflict without bias, which he believes would facilitate a comprehensive political settlement.
