Egyptian Man Poses as Doctor for Two Years, Sparks Investigation

In a startling incident that has raised significant concerns within Egypt's medical community, investigations revealed that a young man impersonated his twin brother, a doctor, and worked for almost two years at a healthcare facility in Beheira province. His deception came to light following a report from a nurse who noticed suspicious behaviors.
According to Egyptian media reports, the accused, identified as Ahmed M., is 29 years old and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Science. He assumed the identity of his twin brother M. M., who is a practicing physician at a healthcare facility in Shubra Khit, Beheira.
He managed to pose as a legitimate doctor and performed daily duties at the healthcare facility without being detected for an extended period.
The situation began when the real doctor received an enticing job offer with a higher salary in the private sector, prompting him to request unpaid leave from his public sector position.
However, the request was denied by the Beheira health authority, leading the two brothers to devise a secret agreement to switch roles:
the real doctor would take on his private job while his unqualified brother filled in at the healthcare facility to maintain the state position.
Investigations indicated that the twins' striking resemblance made it nearly impossible for staff and patients to distinguish between them, allowing the ruse to continue undetected.
During his tenure, the “imposter doctor” saw patients and conducted routine medical examinations, but he exercised caution to avoid detection; he steered clear of critical cases and often claimed to be busy or postponed important medical decisions to prevent making serious errors.
However, his behavior eventually raised suspicions, as a nurse noticed anomalies inconsistent with a trained physician's conduct.
She promptly alerted the authorities, who launched an investigation that uncovered the surprising truth.
Following the revelation, both brothers were suspended from their positions and referred to the public prosecutor, who is investigating serious charges, including forgery of official documents, identity fraud, and practicing medicine without a license.
This case continues to draw significant attention, raising questions about oversight in healthcare facilities and highlighting the dangers posed by unqualified individuals in roles that directly affect public health and safety.
