Kit Harington, the British actor famed for his role as Jon Snow in the acclaimed series Game of Thrones, has sparked controversy by criticizing a petition that seeks to remake the show's eighth and final season. He described the initiative as illogical and a negative consequence of social media.
In an interview with the New York Times, Harington, 39, stated, "I was really angry... How dare you?" He labeled the petition as "a foolish act that could only happen in the era of social media."
Challenging Times During the Final Season
The actor revealed that the airing of the final season in 2019 coincided with his treatment for addiction, and he expressed shock at the scale of the backlash, particularly after approximately 1.8 million people signed the petition urging HBO to hire "competent writers" to rewrite the ending, instead of the original creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
Some fans justified their stance by noting the absence of a complete literary source, as author George R.R. Martin had not finished the book series A Song of Ice and Fire, upon which the show is based.
Support from Co-Stars
Harington previously acknowledged the division among fans regarding the series finale, noting that the production team faced significant stress during filming. However, he questioned the feasibility of a better alternative ending. His views are echoed by co-star Sophie Turner, who dismissed the petition as "disrespectful," while Nikolaj Coster-Waldau labeled it "frustrating," emphasizing the difficulty of satisfying all viewers with a project of such magnitude.
