Former Arsenal Player Gifts Historic 'Invincibles' Jersey to New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani

Pascal Cygan, a former French national player and defender for Arsenal, presented New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani with one of his jerseys from the club's historic 2003-2004 "Invincibles" season. This gesture followed Mamdani's unexpected remarks during an appearance on the "Adam Friedland Podcast," where he expressed a deep appreciation for Cygan and two other players, Marouane Chamakh and Sébastien Squillaci, noting that they significantly contributed to his affection for Arsenal.
During the podcast, Mamdani surprised the audience by stating that he thinks about these players "every morning," despite their less prominent status compared to club legends like Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.
Cygan responded emotionally to the tribute, acknowledging the mayor's choice of players who are not typically recognized as stars. He remarked that Mamdani's recognition reflects a genuine loyalty and love for the club.
Cygan stated:
> "It’s amazing that someone of such importance in the world speaks about me and my teammates with such affection. What he said has made me one of the happiest men."
He emphasized that the trio were not "failures or unknowns," but rather dedicated professionals who gave their best. He found it remarkable to receive this late recognition nearly two decades later.
As a token of gratitude, Cygan decided to gift Mamdani one of his original jerseys worn during the 2003-2004 season, highlighting that he presented it "without any expectation of return." This season is celebrated for Arsenal's remarkable achievement of going the entire Premier League campaign unbeaten.
