Austrian driver Oscar Piastri from McLaren achieved a significant victory in the sprint race of the Qatar Grand Prix, having started from pole position and successfully holding his lead until the finish line. This win narrowed the points gap to his teammate Lando Norris to just 22 points in the driver standings.
Excitement marked the competition at the Losail circuit, with George Russell of Mercedes finishing second, nearly five seconds behind. Norris completed the race in third place, managing to outpace four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who finished fourth.
Following this result, Norris leads the championship with 396 points, followed by Piastri with 374 points and Verstappen in third with 371 points, with 50 points still available before the season concludes.
Piastri expressed his satisfaction after the race, noting that the performance was smooth and the pace strong, highlighting his enjoyment of driving on a familiar track.
Norris remarked that overtaking at Losail is particularly challenging, making the qualifying rounds for the upcoming race on Sunday critical for title aspirations.
Yuki Tsunoda finished fifth, followed by Kimi Antonelli in sixth after a time penalty, Fernando Alonso in seventh, and Carlos Sainz in eighth.
Meanwhile, the Ferrari team failed to score points, with Charles Leclerc finishing in 13th place, while Lewis Hamilton, starting from the pit lane, ended up in 17th and expressed dissatisfaction with the car's performance following changes that did not yield the desired results.
