Generation Z: Why Text Messages Are Preferred Over Phone Calls

Responding to phone calls has become increasingly challenging for Generation Z, individuals born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s (approximately 1997 to 2012).
Mary Ellen MacDonald, an emeritus professor of psychology and linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, noted that many young people struggle with scheduling appointments, asking questions, or even disputing a bill, often opting to avoid phone calls altogether.
She explained that the primary reason for this trend is their preference for text messaging and digital communication over phone conversations or in-person meetings.
However, MacDonald cautioned that this avoidance could have greater consequences than they realize, emphasizing that social skills and direct communication are vital in both personal and professional contexts.
* Social and Professional Implications
• Employers are increasingly concerned that young employees may struggle to interact effectively with colleagues and clients.
• Many youths report feeling lonelier, with shrinking social circles, which raises the risk of social isolation.
She added that the issue extends beyond social awkwardness; engaging in direct conversations serves as essential exercise for the brain. Listening to podcasts or watching videos on platforms like YouTube and TikTok does not provide the same cognitive stimulation as a real conversation; the mental effort required for speaking is greater and offers more significant benefits for focus and learning.
* Speaking Stimulates the Brain and May Prevent Dementia
• Discussing goals enhances mental focus and tracking.
• Athletes practice self-talk to improve endurance and mood.
• Talking about specific topics accelerates learning and solidifies knowledge.
• Regular social interaction may protect against dementia and promote mental health, although research has yet to identify all long-term effects of reduced direct interaction.
* Reasons for Avoidance
1 _ COVID-19 Pandemic: Limited social interaction opportunities during the transition to adulthood and remote work.
2 _ Overprotective Parenting: Removed many childhood challenges, leading to decreased adaptability and communication skills.
* Suggested Solutions
• Encouraging youths to participate in rhetoric, acting, and improvisation classes to enhance their speaking abilities.
• Expanding training programs for interviews and professional communication at universities and job placement centers.
Generation Z faces an invisible challenge in mastering the art of speaking and direct communication, and the current situation may have long-term implications for their mental and social health, according to the psychologist.
