UNICEF Reports 1.2 Million Children Victimized by AI-Generated Sexual Images in One Year

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has raised alarms over a significant increase in the use of artificial intelligence technologies to generate fake sexual images of children, with an estimated 1.2 million children impacted in the past year.

The organization emphasized that deepfake technology constitutes not just a digital offense but a genuine assault on children, inflicting lasting psychological and social damage, even when there is no direct physical abuse involved.

UNICEF has urged for immediate action on both legal and technical fronts. This includes strengthening legislation, ensuring accountability for those involved, creating tools to monitor and eliminate fake content, and fostering international collaboration to safeguard children against these escalating digital threats.
