The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Monday that 53 migrants are either dead or missing after a boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea close to the Libyan city of Zuwara. Only two women were rescued from the incident.
The IOM emphasized that such tragedies are part of the perilous attempts made by migrants to cross the Mediterranean. Last year, the organization recorded 1,873 fatalities or disappearances among migrants, with 1,342 occurring on the central route from North Africa to Europe, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by those seeking refuge or better opportunities in Europe.
