Australian driver Oscar Piastri, representing McLaren, clinched a vital victory in the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, he successfully held off his competitors to cross the finish line first, reducing the points deficit to his teammate Lando Norris in the drivers' standings to just 22 points.
The race at the Losail circuit was thrilling, with George Russell of Mercedes finishing in second place, approximately five seconds behind Piastri. Lando Norris secured third, ahead of four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who finished fourth.
Following this result, Norris leads the championship with 396 points, while Piastri is in second with 374 points, and Verstappen is close behind with 371 points. There are still 50 points available in the remaining races of the season.
Piastri expressed his satisfaction post-race, noting that his performance was smooth and that he enjoyed racing on a circuit he knows well.
Norris emphasized the difficulty of overtaking at Losail, highlighting the importance of qualifying for the upcoming Grand Prix on Sunday in determining their title chances.
In the subsequent positions, Yuki Tsunoda finished fifth, followed by Kimi Antonelli in sixth after a time penalty, Fernando Alonso in seventh, and Carlos Sainz in eighth.
Ferrari struggled, with Charles Leclerc finishing thirteenth and Lewis Hamilton, who started from the pits, finishing seventeenth. Hamilton voiced his disappointment regarding the car's performance after changes that did not yield the expected results.
