British actor Kit Harington, renowned for his portrayal of Jon Snow in the series Game of Thrones, has sparked controversy after voicing his discontent with a fan petition calling for a remake of the eighth and final season. He labeled the initiative as illogical and indicative of the negative influence of social media.
In an interview with the New York Times, Harington (39) stated, “I was really angry... How dare you?” He described the petition as “a stupid act that could only arise in the age of social media.”
Challenging Experience During Final Season
The actor disclosed that the airing of the final season in 2019 coincided with his treatment for addiction, expressing surprise at the scale of the backlash, especially given that nearly 1.8 million people signed the petition urging HBO to hire “competent writers” to rewrite the ending, rather than David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
Some fans justified their stance by pointing to the lack of a complete literary source, as author George R.R. Martin had not finished the A Song of Ice and Fire series on which the show is based.
Support from Co-Stars
Harington has previously acknowledged the audience's mixed feelings regarding the series finale, noting that the production team experienced significant fatigue towards the end of filming. However, he expressed skepticism about the possibility of a better alternative ending.
His views are echoed by co-star Sophie Turner, who dismissed the petition as “disrespectful,” while Nikolaj Coster-Waldau described the initiative as “disturbing,” asserting that it is nearly impossible to satisfy all viewers in a work of this magnitude.
