Egyptian Health Ministry Warns: Smoking During Dust Storms Doubles Respiratory Risks

Egypt is experiencing a new wave of severe weather on Tuesday, characterized by dust storms, thunderstorms, and a significant drop in temperature.
The Ministry of Health has issued a warning to citizens about the dangers of smoking during this period, emphasizing that it heightens the risk of respiratory inflammation and exacerbates congestion and breathing difficulties, particularly with the increase of dust particles in the air.
The ministry has confirmed that individuals with pre-existing respiratory issues are most vulnerable to complications, urging smokers to quit immediately to protect themselves and those around them from acute respiratory crises.
In light of the weather warnings, wind speeds are expected to range between 35 and 50 km/h, lifting sand and dust in various regions, which may impair visibility on the roads.
Additionally, significant disruptions to maritime navigation in the Mediterranean Sea are anticipated, with waves potentially reaching heights of 5.5 meters, along with moderate to heavy thunderstorms expected in Alexandria and northern coastal areas, extending to Cairo in varying degrees.
On Monday, the capital and Greater Cairo experienced a severe dust storm, enveloping the cities in thick clouds of yellow dust, which reduced visibility to less than 500 meters and disrupted both air and sea travel.
Authorities have advised citizens to exercise caution while driving, anticipating dense fog in the morning, and to stay clear of trees, billboards, and utility poles during windy conditions to ensure public safety.
Amid these unstable weather conditions, the Ministry of Health's most prominent warning is clear:
Quit smoking immediately to protect your lungs!
