The British actor Kit Harington, renowned for his role as Jon Snow in the series Game of Thrones, has sparked controversy by voicing his discontent with a fan petition calling for a remake of the eighth and final season. He described the initiative as illogical and a negative reflection of social media's influence.
In an interview with the New York Times, Harington (39) stated, "I was genuinely angry... How dare they?" He characterized the petition as "a foolish act that could only arise in the age of social media."
Challenging Experience During the Final Season
The actor disclosed that the airing of the final season in 2019 coincided with his treatment for addiction, expressing surprise at the scale of the backlash, particularly after approximately 1.8 million people signed the petition urging HBO to hire "competent writers" to rewrite the ending, rather than David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
Some fans justified their stance by highlighting the incomplete narrative source, as author George R.R. Martin had not finished the A Song of Ice and Fire novels on which the series is based.
Support from Co-Stars
Harington has acknowledged the divided opinions regarding the series finale, noting that the production team was experiencing significant fatigue as filming concluded. However, he expressed skepticism about the existence of a better alternative ending. His perspective is shared by co-star Sophie Turner, who deemed the petition disrespectful, while Nikolaj Coster-Waldau called it "annoying," asserting that pleasing all viewers in a project of this scale is nearly impossible.
