The British publication The Economist has designated Syria as the 'Country of the Year 2025', acknowledging the notable political and social progress the nation has made after enduring decades of conflict and destruction.
Selection Criteria
The magazine clarified that this title is not awarded to the happiest or most influential nation, but rather to the one that has demonstrated the most significant improvement in various areas, including economic, political, or social aspects. In a year characterized by global disruptions, such as the unpredictable policies of U.S. President Donald Trump and ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Sudan, several nations exhibited remarkable advancements, but Syria emerged as particularly noteworthy.
Beginnings of the Syrian Transformation
The report indicates that the transformation commenced in December 2024, when President Bashar al-Assad was ousted following a rebel takeover of the government. Initially, there were concerns about potential chaos or the emergence of a hardline Islamic regime under the new leader, Ahmad al-Shara.
However, these fears did not materialize. Instead, Syria experienced a significant social opening, allowing for greater public freedoms, particularly for women, and the revival of music, entertainment, and the availability of alcoholic beverages. Al-Shara also managed to preserve national unity and establish new diplomatic ties with the United States and Gulf nations.
Economic Recovery and Return of Refugees
Western sanctions have been gradually lifted, facilitating signs of economic recovery, with approximately 3 million refugees returning to Syria, according to the magazine.
Nevertheless, The Economist acknowledged ongoing challenges, including violent acts perpetrated by local militias against minority groups, resulting in around 2,000 fatalities, as well as a governance style under al-Shara that is heavily influenced by tribal dynamics, leaving the country's future somewhat precarious.
Comparison with Other Competitors
Argentina and the United States were also notable contenders, with Argentina successfully curbing inflation and reducing poverty rates, while the U.S. provided financial assistance to avert an economic crisis, though its leadership faced criticism for issues of corruption and authoritarianism.
Despite these difficulties, The Economist concluded that Syria has experienced unprecedented improvements after years of turmoil and devastation. While life remains challenging, it has become relatively normalized for many Syrians, and the pervasive atmosphere of fear has diminished. This significant progress has made Syria deserving of the title of Country of the Year 2025.
