The US envoy to Syria, Tom Brack, stated on Saturday that his recent discussions with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara in Damascus focused on the situation in Aleppo and the broader political transformation in Syria.
Brack noted that President Donald Trump views this period as a crucial chance to establish a new, unified Syria that respects the rights and dignity of all its citizens.
He affirmed that Washington supports the ongoing historic changes in Syria and backs the government led by Farouk al-Shara in its quest for stability, highlighting Damascus's commitment to the March 2025 agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
However, he expressed concern that recent developments in Aleppo could jeopardize the agreement, which raises significant alarms in Washington.
Brack urged all involved parties to immediately halt hostilities and exercise maximum restraint, advocating for a return to dialogue based on the agreements reached on March 10 and April 1, 2025, between the Syrian government and the SDF.
He cautioned that ongoing violence could undermine the progress achieved since the fall of the Assad regime and could lead to external interventions that would not benefit any party involved.
Brack reiterated the US State Department's readiness to facilitate discussions between the Syrian government and the SDF aimed at achieving a comprehensive integration process that maintains the country's unity.
He concluded by stating that the ultimate objective is a unified, sovereign Syria, reconciled with itself and its neighbors, where all citizens have equal rights and opportunities.
