Bruno Fernandes propelled the Portuguese national team to a remarkable 9-1 victory over Armenia on Sunday, in the final match of the European qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in North America.
Despite the absence of star player Cristiano Ronaldo due to a suspension, Fernandes showcased his skills with a hat trick, including two penalties, while João Neves also contributed with three goals, highlighting the strength of Portugal's emerging talent in the absence of their veteran captain.
The match, held at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto, saw Portugal dominate from the outset, with Renato Veiga opening the scoring in the 7th minute, followed by Gonçalo Ramos in the 28th minute. Neves, Fernandes, and Conceição added to the tally, while Edward Spertsyan netted Armenia's sole goal in the 18th minute.
Ronaldo's absence came after he received a red card in the previous match against Ireland, marking the first time in his international career, spanning 226 matches, that he was sent off.
This victory allowed Portugal to top Group 6, confirming their ninth qualification for the World Cup in history.
