Elon Musk Cuts Off Starlink Access to Russia Amid Drone Warfare Concerns

In a strategic move, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, announced that the company has successfully neutralized the capabilities of the Russian military by preventing unauthorized access to its Starlink satellite systems. This decision follows reports from Ukrainian intelligence indicating that Moscow was exploiting this technology to control suicide drone attacks.
Musk stated on his account on the platform X:
"It appears that the measures we have implemented to stop the illegal use of Starlink by Russia have borne fruit," emphasizing that the technical steps taken by the company have effectively disconnected the Russian drone network from the satellite services.
This action follows official Ukrainian reports claiming that Russian forces had hacked Starlink receivers to extend the operational range of suicide drone attacks, specifically of the BM_35 type, into Ukrainian territory.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov revealed a close collaboration with SpaceX to ensure complete technological sovereignty over Ukrainian airspace. He noted that new security protocols are being developed to restrict geographical access and ensure that only authorized devices operate within Ukrainian borders.
Additionally, all users will be required to officially register their devices in the coming days, with any unverified or unauthorized devices set to be disabled.
It is important to note that SpaceX has previously stated its firm refusal to cooperate with the Kremlin or supply equipment to the Russian military. Estimates suggest that the Russian forces acquired some of these devices through "seizure and theft" from occupied areas in Ukraine, subsequently repurposing them for offensive use, which directly violates the company's usage policy.
Since the onset of the war in February 2022, Starlink has remained a critical component of Ukrainian defense communications, with officials in Kyiv describing it as an "invisible weapon" that has preserved the country's information infrastructure from collapse.
