Turkish Teacher Sentenced to 130 Years for Sexual Abuse of Students

Details of the Case and Trial
According to reports from Turkish media, the first chamber of the criminal court convicted the teacher, identified by the initials "M.A.", of sexual offenses against six students over a two-year period, without granting any leniency. However, he was acquitted of the charge of "threatening children" due to insufficient evidence.
The 45-year-old defendant appeared in court alongside the families of the victims and the defense, in what has been described as one of the most high-profile cases in recent times.
Victim Families Demand Severe Punishments
During the hearing, the families of the children emphasized the need for the harshest penalties for the defendant, arguing that the experiences inflicted upon their children represent a "psychological trauma that cannot be erased." Calls for strict punishment for all involved in child abuse, from individuals to institutions, have spread across social media.
The victims' lawyers confirmed that the defendant had repeatedly exploited the children and demanded the maximum sentence for each instance of abuse without any mitigating circumstances.
Defense Maintains Denial
On the other hand, the defendant's lawyers defended their client, calling for a review of the case and additional investigations, including witness questioning and a re-evaluation of the scene. The teacher continues to deny all allegations, stating, "I have never committed any shameful act in my life. I am a father, a husband, and a good teacher. I demand my acquittal." However, the court found his statements unconvincing in light of the evidence presented and the testimonies of the children.
Severe Sentence Due to Repeated Offenses and Professional Role
The court justified the 130-year sentence by noting that the defendant had committed multiple offenses and, as a teacher who should protect children, he should not have exploited them, in addition to the proven complete sexual assault on at least one child.
Calls for Enhanced Oversight of Private Schools
This incident has reignited discussions about abuse in private and religious schools, with children's rights organizations demanding stricter oversight measures and harsher deterrent penalties to prevent the recurrence of such crimes, which are considered one of the greatest threats to child safety in Turkey.
