Concerns Rise Over Demand for Venomous Snakes Following 'Zootopia 2' Release

A Charming Character and a Dangerous Reality
The film features a friendly blue snake named "Gary the Snake," voiced by actor Ke Huy Quan, making it particularly appealing to children.
However, experts caution that the snake being imitated is the Indonesian pit viper, known for its high toxicity and extreme danger to humans.
Experts Warn Against Keeping as Pets
The Daily Mail reported on warnings from experts confirming that this snake species is entirely unsuitable for domestic ownership.
Dr. Nikolaus Brandenhof, director of the Asclepius Foundation for Snakebite Prevention, stated:
"These snakes are highly aggressive, similar to most tree vipers, and can cause severe and dangerous injuries."
From Screen to Online Markets
The film's fame has turned into a perilous business opportunity, as the Indonesian pit viper is widely available in China and on popular online platforms like RedNote and the Xianyou market for prices around £191 (1800 Yuan), often without any warnings or safety restrictions.
Surge in Interest and Unpredictable Risks
Brandenhof noted that interest in these snakes has surged since the film's release, highlighting that many buyers are unaware of the risks or the complex care requirements involved.
He added:
"The Indonesian pit viper is not a toy for children, and purchasing one without full awareness could endanger the owner's life."
Irresponsible Trade in Exotic Animals
Reports from Chinese newspapers like The Paper revealed that accounts are selling these snakes alongside toys and non-venomous animals, indicating a troubling trend in the exotic animal trade driven by fame and fashion rather than safety or environmental awareness.
Final Warning: Do Not Be Misled by Appearances
Wildlife experts emphasized that interactions with these snakes are often limited to feeding moments, and handling them without experience can lead to severe and potentially fatal bites.
They urged the public to reject the notion of owning pets inspired by films or cartoon characters, regardless of how cute or appealing they may appear.
