Deschamps Defends Mbappé's Running Style and Leadership Role

During a recent sports journalism festival in Laval, Didier Deschamps, head coach of the French national team, addressed comments regarding team captain Kylian Mbappé. He asserted that Mbappé is not "selfish" and that it is unrealistic to expect him to cover "at least 11 kilometers in every match."

Deschamps responded to a journalist's observation that Mbappé is the only player on the team who does not run as much, humorously adding:

"This applies to the goalkeeper as well; that's your analysis. I don't think so, even if some players run shorter distances than others."

The 57-year-old coach elaborated:

"If you want him to run 11 kilometers in every match, there's no need for that; he won't do it."

Assistant coach Guy Stephan, who was also present, supported Deschamps by stating that Mbappé runs at high speeds and with considerable intensity, which is a key aspect of his role as an attacking player.

Deschamps concluded by saying:

"You may have mixed feelings about Kylian's personality, but young players admire him. While some may view him as a selfish and isolated figure, it’s important to note that he embodies true leadership within the French national team."
