Indonesian authorities incinerated 7.5 tons of shrimp on Saturday after confirming contamination with the radioactive isotope cesium-137. This action was taken in response to a report from U.S. officials recommending urgent safety measures.
Testing conducted by the Indonesian Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency revealed traces of radiation on the outer packaging of the shrimp, which were distributed in 494 boxes across two shipping containers. The radiation levels were measured at 10.8 becquerels per kilogram, significantly below the safety threshold of 100 becquerels per kilogram, as reported by "Antara News."
Despite the low radiation levels, authorities opted to destroy the contaminated shrimp to mitigate any potential health risks, following the guidance of the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency and the Indonesian Quarantine Agency.
