Washington Imposes New Sanctions on Venezuela and Maduro Associates

**Targets Among Maduro's Associates**
The sanctions specifically target three members of Maduro's family, including two who were released by the United States in 2022 during a prisoner exchange with Venezuela.
Evraïn Antonio Campo Flores and Franky Francisco Flores de Freitas were convicted in 2017 for drug trafficking after being arrested in Haiti and subsequently handed over to U.S. authorities.
The third individual is Carlos Eric Malpica Flores, vice president of the state oil company "Petróleos de Venezuela," who had previously been sanctioned by the U.S. from 2017 to 2022.
Additionally, sanctions were imposed on a Panamanian businessman accused of signing contracts with Maduro and his associates.
**Focus on the Oil Sector and Associated Entities**
The measures include sanctions against six vessels accused of participating in the transportation of Venezuelan oil, registered in the United Kingdom, the British Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands.
These sanctions follow the seizure of a tanker by U.S. Coast Guard, which was alleged to be transporting Venezuelan crude oil. White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated that the vessel was headed to a U.S. port for the confiscation of its oil.
**Sanctions Measures and Impact**
The sanctions entail a complete freeze of the assets of the targeted individuals and companies within the United States, prohibiting any U.S. citizen or entity from engaging in transactions with them. An embargo may also be applied to foreign citizens or companies if they use the dollar in transactions with the sanctioned individuals, thereby increasing financial pressure on the Venezuelan regime and its partners.
**Statements from the Treasury Department**
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bancenet stated:
"Nicolás Maduro and his criminal associates are flooding the United States with drugs that poison the American people. Under the Trump administration, the Treasury Department holds the regime and its associates accountable for their crimes."
