Trump Criticizes U.S. Universities for Anti-American Ideologies

Former President Donald Trump criticized U.S. universities, claiming that many have strayed from their mission and have been compromised by anti-American ideologies. He pledged to implement significant reforms aimed at restoring merit and hard work to the forefront of American education.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed that his administration would take strict action against institutions engaging in illegal discrimination based on race or gender. He stated that a "new golden era of higher education" would begin with universities that comply with federal laws and enter into cooperative agreements with the government.
Threats of Funding Cuts and Investigation into Harvard
The Trump administration indicated its intention to freeze federal funding for several universities, including Harvard, citing what it described as "ideological bias" and concerns over diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, as well as pro-Palestinian demonstrations that occurred on campus last year.
Additionally, an investigation has been announced into $8.7 billion in grants received by Harvard to ensure compliance with civil rights laws, while the Internal Revenue Service is contemplating revoking Harvard's tax-exempt status.
Academic Pushback and Legal Challenges
In response, Harvard has rejected Trump's calls for internal changes, and several faculty members have filed lawsuits against the federal investigation, viewing it as political interference in academic independence.
Background of Protests
This escalation follows widespread protests that began at Columbia University in April 2024 and spread to over 50 universities in support of Palestine and Gaza, resulting in the arrest of more than 3,100 students and faculty members.
