Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, stated on Saturday that international support for Sudan remains significantly inadequate, warning that the humanitarian crisis in the country, particularly in the Darfur region, has reached catastrophic levels.
Fletcher emphasized that Darfur has become the epicenter of suffering in Sudan, noting that the aid provided is insufficient to address the ongoing crisis, as blockades and restrictions on aid delivery persist.
He confirmed that over 21 million people are facing acute food insecurity, which accounts for approximately 45% of the Sudanese population.
Fletcher stressed the need to allow international media access to document atrocities and violations, arguing that the media blackout exacerbates civilian suffering and undermines the international response. He also called for accountability for those responsible for violations, asserting that atrocities will not cease without genuine accountability.
