Severe Flooding in Safi, Morocco Claims 21 Lives Amid Heavy Rainfall

Severe flooding struck the coastal city of Safi, located 300 kilometers south of Rabat, on Sunday, December 14, 2025, leading to 21 fatalities and injuring 32 others.
Local authorities reported that intense storms caused unprecedented flash floods within just one hour, overwhelming the city’s streets.
The floods inundated 70 homes and businesses in the historic center, swept away approximately 10 vehicles, and damaged crucial roadways, disrupting traffic.
Images shared on social media depicted the devastating floods carrying debris and vehicles through the streets, with muddy waters rushing past.
Other footage showed part of a mausoleum partially submerged, while civil defense teams utilized boats to rescue residents trapped in various areas of the city.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with search teams working to locate any missing persons. Authorities confirmed they are securing affected areas and providing comprehensive support to flood victims.
The Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology has announced snowfall in elevations above 1,700 meters and issued warnings for heavy rain accompanied by localized thunderstorms across the kingdom in the coming days.
According to the agency, other regions in Morocco are expected to receive rainfall between 40 to 60 mm, raising concerns about potential flooding in additional areas.
This natural disaster highlights the challenges Morocco faces due to climate change, which is increasing the frequency of such devastating events.
