Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis champion, has declared his full withdrawal from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), which he co-founded in 2020 alongside Vasek Pospisil. This decision stems from fundamental disagreements regarding values and governance within the organization.
Reasons for Withdrawal
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Djokovic expressed, "It has become clear that my values and my approach no longer align with the current direction of the organization." He emphasized that he will continue to focus on his tennis career, family, and contribute to the sport in a manner that reflects his principles and integrity, wishing the best for the players and all involved parties.
Legal Context
Earlier this year, the PTPA initiated legal action against regulatory bodies, including the ATP and the International Tennis Federation, alleging anti-competitive practices. In September, the organizers of the four Grand Slam tournaments were also implicated in the lawsuit amid accusations of failing to ensure player safety.
Response from the Association
The PTPA issued an official statement affirming its commitment to open communication and collaborative decision-making. The organization indicated that it was close to reaching an agreement with Tennis Australia ahead of the Australian Open in January.
