Colombian President Raises Concerns Over Trump's Military Remarks

In an interview with El País, Petro stated:
"There were indications that they were preparing for something, perhaps a military operation. I undoubtedly feared facing a fate similar to that of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro."
Petro noted that the military threat appeared to diminish following a one-hour conversation with Trump on Wednesday, saying:
"I believe the threat has been postponed, and I may have been mistaken."
In this context, Trump announced on Friday that he would meet with Petro at the White House during the first week of February 2026, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the two nations in combating drug trafficking. He posted on his platform "Truth Social":
"I look forward to meeting Gustavo Petro; it will be extremely beneficial for Colombia and the United States, but we must prevent cocaine and other drugs from entering the United States."
This announcement comes amid a backdrop of complex U.S. political maneuvers, with the region having experienced similar incidents in the past, raising numerous questions about the true intentions behind Trump's statements regarding Colombia.
