Understanding the Impact of Trauma on Future Perspectives

Many individuals experience confusion regarding their future, particularly concerning marriage, parenthood, or general life plans, making it difficult to envision themselves years ahead. This phenomenon is referred to by psychologists as the "Sense of Foreshortened Future."
Alec Williams, a psychological therapist and member of the BACP specializing in trauma treatment in London, explains that this sensation extends beyond merely anticipating an early death; it signifies a deeper disorder that disrupts a person's worldview and undermines their confidence in their surroundings. This feeling often arises after severe psychological trauma, which distorts an individual's perception of time, leading to a disconnect between their past, present, and future.
Williams notes, "Individuals experiencing this sensation struggle to make long-term plans or commit to relationships because the future appears meaningless or uncertain. It exists mentally, but emotionally it feels inaccessible or devoid of significance."
Experts assert that psychological therapy can assist in restoring confidence in life by rebuilding the connections between past, present, and future, effectively placing trauma in its correct temporal context and reinstating a sense of hope and belonging. They also recommend practicing self-awareness, engaging in positive activities, socializing, and self-care as practical steps to alleviate symptoms.
