U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported today that on Friday, Iranian forces carried out an assault on an oil tanker named "Talara," which flies the flag of the Marshall Islands, while it was navigating through international waters in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the statement, elements of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard arrived at the vessel via a military helicopter, forcibly boarded the ship, and subsequently took it to Iranian territorial waters, where it remains detained.
CENTCOM characterized the use of military force to seize a commercial vessel in international waters as a blatant violation of international law, undermining freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of global trade.
It also urged Iran to clarify the legal basis for its actions to the international community, stating that U.S. forces will continue to monitor the situation closely.
This incident occurs amid escalating maritime tensions between Washington and Tehran, particularly following Iranian warnings regarding potential responses to recent military confrontations with Israel.
