Egyptian Health Unit Scandal: Man Poses as Twin Brother, Works as Doctor for Two Years

In a shocking incident that has stirred both the medical community and public opinion in Egypt, investigations revealed that a man impersonated his twin brother, a licensed doctor, working in his place at a health unit in Beheira province for nearly two years. The deception came to light after a nurse reported suspicious behavior.
The accused, identified as Ahmed M., is 29 years old and holds a degree in science. He took on the identity of his twin brother M. M., who is a doctor assigned to a health unit in Shubra Khit, Beheira.
Throughout this period, he successfully posed as the official doctor and performed daily duties without raising any alarms.
The situation began when the real doctor received an attractive job offer with a higher salary in the private sector, prompting him to request a leave of absence from his government position.
However, the Beheira Health Directorate denied his request, leading the brothers to secretly agree to swap roles: the real doctor would pursue his private job while his unqualified brother would take his place in the health unit to maintain government employment.
Investigations revealed that the twins' striking resemblance made it nearly impossible for staff and patients to distinguish between them, allowing the deception to persist for an extended period.
During his time in the role, the “fake doctor” attended to patients and conducted routine medical examinations, but he was careful to avoid critical and complex cases, often citing busyness or delaying medical decisions to prevent making serious errors.
However, his unusual behavior did not go unnoticed. A nurse at the unit began to suspect him after observing actions that did not align with the experience expected of a physician. She promptly reported her concerns to the relevant authorities, triggering an investigation that uncovered the startling truth.
Following the discovery, both brothers were suspended from their positions and referred to the public prosecutor, which initiated an investigation into serious charges including forgery of official documents, impersonation of a doctor, and practicing medicine without a license.
The case continues to attract significant attention due to the serious questions it raises about oversight mechanisms within healthcare facilities and the risks posed by unqualified individuals holding positions that directly impact public health.
