Jordan Weather Service Issues Storm Warnings and Flood Alerts

The Jordan Meteorological Department has issued a warning that the kingdom will experience a cold and humid air mass starting tomorrow, Friday, January 9, 2026, due to a low-pressure system located north of Cyprus. This will lead to a significant drop in temperatures and overcast conditions across various regions.
According to the Jordanian news agency (Petra), rainfall is expected to begin in the morning in the northern parts of the country and central regions, gradually spreading to most areas.
As the afternoon progresses, the cold front will move through, intensifying rainfall, particularly in the northern and central regions, as well as the southwestern areas and along the valleys and the Dead Sea.
The meteorological service indicated that the rain may be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, increasing the risk of flooding in valleys and low-lying areas.
Late at night, the intensity of the rain is expected to gradually decrease, with a limited chance of light rain and sporadic snow mixed with rain in the peaks of the Sharah mountains, along with fog formation in many areas, especially mountainous regions.
Strong westerly to northwesterly winds are also anticipated, with gusts reaching speeds of 50 to 65 km/h, which will enhance the cold sensation and affect horizontal visibility, particularly in coastal areas due to dust.
* High-Level Warning and Recommendations for Citizens
The Meteorological Department has issued a high-level warning regarding:
• The risk of flooding in valleys and low-lying areas.
• Reduced visibility due to fog, low clouds, and heavy rainfall.
• High wind speeds and strong gusts.
• Potential visibility reduction in coastal areas due to dust.
Citizens are advised not to attempt to cross flooded areas or places with accumulated rainwater, to wear warm clothing, and to use heating appliances safely, paying particular attention to the elderly and children. They should also be cautious of slippery roads and secure any loose objects that may be blown away.
* Continued Cold Weather on Saturday
The cold air mass will persist into Saturday, with cold and partly cloudy to overcast conditions expected, along with the possibility of scattered rain in parts of the western regions. Rain chances will decrease by the afternoon, while cold conditions will continue overnight, with a chance of fog formation.
