Fatal Shark Attack Claims Life of U.S. Tourist in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Local authorities reported that 56-year-old Arlene Lillis was attacked while swimming near Dorch Beach on Saint Croix on Thursday, January 8, around 4:28 p.m. local time. Emergency responders, including marine units, fire crews, and ambulances, were dispatched immediately after the alert. Upon arrival, they found the victim with severe injuries, including the loss of one arm, before she was rushed to the hospital, where she succumbed to her critical injuries.
Tourist Christopher Carroll, who was staying at a nearby resort, was among the first to attempt a rescue. He told the Virgin Islands Consortium that he observed chaos in the water and a significant amount of blood, indicating a serious attack, and described the scene as shocking.
Following the incident, rescue teams searched the area around the beach to ensure there were no additional victims, but no further injuries have been reported so far.
U.S. Virgin Islands authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and have urged anyone with relevant information to contact the criminal investigation office. As of Friday, no additional details have been released.
This incident is considered one of the most serious marine attacks in the area recently, raising new questions about safety measures at tourist beaches.
