Ex-Arsenal Player Gifts Historic Jersey to New York Mayor After Surprising Remarks

Pascal Cygan, former defender for Arsenal and French international, presented New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani with one of his jerseys from the club's unbeaten 2003-2004 season, following Mamdani's unexpected comments praising Cygan and two other teammates.
During an appearance on the "Adam Friedland Podcast," Mamdani caught the audience off guard by stating that Cygan, Marouane Chamakh, and Sébastien Squillaci were instrumental in shaping his passion for Arsenal. He mentioned that he thinks of them "every morning," despite their not being the most prominent figures in the club's history.
Cygan expressed his gratitude for being acknowledged by someone of Mamdani's stature, noting that the mayor's choice to highlight less celebrated players reflects a genuine loyalty and love for the club.
Cygan remarked:
> "It’s incredible that someone so significant speaks fondly of me and my teammates. What he said made me one of the happiest men alive."
The French defender emphasized that the trio were never "failures or unknowns," but rather dedicated professionals who gave their all, and he found it exceptional to receive recognition nearly 20 years later.
In a heartfelt gesture of appreciation, Cygan gifted Mamdani one of his original jerseys worn during the historic unbeaten season, stating he offered it "without expecting anything in return."
