The Australian driver Oscar Piastri, representing McLaren, claimed a notable victory in the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, he successfully held his lead until the finish line, reducing the points gap with teammate Lando Norris to just 22 in the drivers' standings.
The competition at the Losail circuit was intense, with George Russell from Mercedes finishing in second place, nearly five seconds behind. Norris secured third place, outperforming four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who ended the race in fourth.
Following this result, Norris leads the standings with 396 points, while Piastri follows closely with 374 points, and Verstappen is in third with 371 points. There are still 50 points available before the season concludes.
Piastri expressed his satisfaction post-race, noting that the performance was smooth and the pace strong, indicating he enjoyed racing on a circuit he knows well.
Norris highlighted the difficulty of overtaking at Losail, emphasizing that qualifying sessions for the upcoming Grand Prix on Sunday will be crucial for title aspirations.
In the following positions, Yuki Tsunoda finished fifth, Kimi Antonelli sixth after a time penalty, Fernando Alonso seventh, and Carlos Sainz eighth.
Meanwhile, Ferrari struggled to score points, with Charles Leclerc finishing 13th and Lewis Hamilton, who exited the pits, placing 17th. Hamilton expressed dissatisfaction with the car's performance following changes that did not yield the desired results.
