South Korea Unveils Lightweight Wearable Robot to Enhance Physical Strength

The innovation utilizes microfibers approximately 25 micrometers in diameter—about a quarter the thickness of a human hair—woven into threads that act as artificial muscles. These muscles contract when heated and return to their original length upon cooling, enabling substantial mechanical force generation relative to the device's light weight.
Resembling a vest or coat, the robot is equipped with sensors that monitor joint movements, such as those in the shoulder and elbow. The system regulates the energy supplied to the artificial muscles, providing support only when necessary, thereby maintaining user flexibility and comfort.
Weighing less than 2 kilograms, the device is comparable to regular clothing and effectively assists users in lifting objects and performing strenuous movements.
