Over the past weekend, nearly 250 individuals lost their lives in violent confrontations in Pakistan's Balochistan province, attributed to assaults by the separatist group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), according to a security official who spoke to AFP on Wednesday.

Casualties Among Civilians and Security Forces

The official reported that the violence resulted in the deaths of at least 36 civilians and 22 security personnel, while a robust response from the Pakistani military led to the deaths of 197 BLA members.

Details of the Assaults

The province has seen a series of sporadic confrontations, with insurgents targeting banks, military installations, prisons, and police stations. The BLA, designated as a "terrorist organization" by the United States, confirmed its assaults on military sites and officials within police and civil administration through gunfire and suicide bombings.

Increasing Violence in Recent Years

In recent years, the BLA has escalated its attacks against security forces, Pakistani officials, and foreign corporate interests across various regions, exacerbating the security challenges in this province bordering Iran.

International Responses

The United Nations condemned the recent violence, labeling it as "horrific." A spokesperson for the UN Security Council extended condolences to the victims' families and the people of Pakistan, stressing the importance of addressing violence and ensuring security in the region.
