Iran Allows Women to Obtain Motorcycle and Scooter Licenses, Marking a Shift in Mobility Rights

Iran has officially permitted women to acquire motorcycle and scooter licenses, marking a notable advancement in mobility rights. This decision follows a decree signed by the First Vice President of Iran, which instructs traffic police to issue licenses to women and to implement practical training programs.

Training and Testing Conducted by Female Instructors

The relevant authorities have stated that the training and testing will be overseen by qualified female instructors, aiming to facilitate women's access to licenses while ensuring compliance with established safety standards.

Addressing Long-standing Administrative Barriers

Although there was no formal legal prohibition, women's access to these licenses had been severely limited by administrative interpretations, which often left them without legal and insurance coverage and imposed financial burdens in case of accidents.

A Measure to Improve Mobility and Road Safety

Government agencies, including the Office of the Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, have confirmed that this decision not only broadens women's mobility rights but also aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve road safety through better regulation of motorcycles and scooters.

Immediate Action Following Organizational Preparations

The Vice President for Women’s Affairs announced that all necessary technical and administrative arrangements have been completed, enabling the immediate launch of training courses and the issuance of licenses, following years of advocacy from activists and civil society groups for this recognition.

Promoting Women's Role in the Transportation Sector

This decision signifies a progressive step toward increasing the involvement of Iranian women in transportation and public life, providing a legal and institutional framework that allows them to exercise this right safely and systematically.
