FIFA Issues Suspension to Ronaldo Following Red Card in World Cup Qualifier

The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced on Tuesday that Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has received a three-match suspension following his red card in a World Cup qualifying match against Ireland.

Of the three matches, two are suspended for one year, meaning Ronaldo may not miss any games during the World Cup finals set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ronaldo had already completed a one-match suspension during Portugal's recent 9-1 victory over Armenia, which secured the team's qualification for the World Cup.

The red card was issued after Ronaldo elbowed Irish defender Dara O'Shea in a match that ended with Portugal losing 0-2 in Dublin two weeks ago, raising concerns about his participation in what would be his sixth World Cup.

Initially, there were fears that Ronaldo could miss Portugal's opening match in the World Cup, but FIFA's lenient ruling has alleviated that possibility.

This decision comes just six days after Ronaldo attended an official dinner at the White House with U.S. President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Ronaldo is currently in his third season with Saudi club Al Nassr.
