Flooding in Safi, Morocco Claims 21 Lives Amid Heavy Rainfall

The coastal city of Safi, located 300 kilometers south of Rabat, faced a tragic event on Sunday, December 14, 2025, as sudden flooding led to the deaths of 21 individuals and injuries to 32 others.
According to local authorities, intense thunderstorms produced unprecedented rainfall within just one hour, inundating the streets of the city.
The floodwaters affected 70 homes and businesses in the historic center, swept away approximately 10 vehicles, and damaged key roads, causing significant traffic disruptions.
Images shared on social media depict raging currents carrying debris and vehicles, while muddy water flowed through the streets, dragging away both cars and waste.
Other footage shows a partially submerged shrine, as civil protection teams deployed boats to rescue residents trapped in various parts of the city.
Rescue efforts continue as search teams work to locate any missing persons, while authorities confirmed they are securing affected areas and providing comprehensive support to those impacted by the flooding.
The Moroccan meteorological agency has announced that snowfall is expected at elevations above 1,700 meters, with warnings of heavy rainfall anticipated in various regions of the kingdom over the coming days.
According to the agency, other areas of Morocco are forecasted to receive between 40 and 60 mm of rain, raising concerns about potential flooding in additional regions.
This natural disaster highlights the challenges Morocco faces due to climate change, which is increasing the frequency of such devastating events.
