Egypt: Weight Loss Center Run by Unqualified Engineer Shut Down

In a significant action against unlicensed medical facilities, health authorities in Dakahlia have uncovered a weight loss and therapeutic nutrition center operated by an individual without the necessary qualifications. It was revealed that the center's director holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and is not a licensed physician, operating illegally in the city of Dakrnis.
The inspection campaign, conducted by the Dakahlia Health Authority, also targeted two centers for addiction and mental health treatment in Mansura and Talkha, involving inspectors from the drug authority and representatives from the regional and national mental health councils. This led to the drafting of protocols and legal actions against the violations.
Dr. Said Farouk, the deputy director for therapeutic medicine, confirmed the continuation of intensive and unannounced inspections of private medical facilities, emphasizing that practices endangering public health will not be tolerated.
Investigations indicate a recurring trend where graduates from agriculture, science, and sports education programs exploit their degrees to feign expertise in nutrition. Many of these centers produce large quantities of unregulated medications and supplements, resulting in severe health issues, including kidney failure and liver cirrhosis in some victims.
In response to these challenges, the government is collaborating with parliament to review the medical practice law, aiming to increase penalties for impersonating a doctor, which could lead to significant prison sentences and fines to protect citizens from illegal medical practices.
