WhatsApp to Replace Phone Numbers with Usernames for Enhanced Privacy

WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature that will fundamentally alter how user identities are presented on the platform. Under this update, phone numbers will be concealed from profiles and replaced with usernames selected by users within the app.

This modification seeks to align WhatsApp more closely with contemporary social media practices while minimizing the reliance on sensitive personal data in everyday interactions.

Enhanced Privacy in Communication

Historically, phone numbers have served as the primary identifier for users on WhatsApp, but this practice has exposed individuals to various risks, particularly the potential for number leaks or misuse by third parties.
The introduction of usernames as the main identifier means that users or businesses will not be able to access phone numbers when initiating conversations or viewing account details, thereby adding a significant layer of privacy, especially in interactions with unfamiliar contacts.

A Technical Response to Security Concerns

Reports indicate that the shift to usernames is also a response to previous security vulnerabilities, particularly after studies highlighted the risk of exploiting WhatsApp's calling feature to gather extensive user data.

While WhatsApp has previously stated it is addressing these security issues, the move to usernames is viewed as an additional safeguard to mitigate future risks of data misuse.

A Modern Approach to Digital Identity

This update underscores WhatsApp's strategy to cultivate a more adaptable digital identity, reflecting the growing competition among messaging applications that prioritize security and user-friendliness.

Industry forecasts suggest that this change will enable businesses and brands to establish a more distinctive presence on WhatsApp, facilitating customer interactions without the necessity of sharing phone numbers directly.

Expected Launch Timeline

As of now, WhatsApp has not disclosed a specific timeline for the official rollout of this feature to all users. However, its presence in beta versions indicates that it is in advanced stages of development and is likely to be gradually introduced in forthcoming app updates.
