Mariam Cisse Murdered in Public Execution in Northern Mali

Residents of Mali were left reeling on Sunday after the murder of TikTok activist Mariam Cisse, who had garnered approximately 90,000 followers. Her family and local officials reported that she was kidnapped and subsequently executed in Independence Square in the city of Tonka, located in northern Mali.
According to her family, armed assailants abducted Cisse on Thursday, accusing her of "collaborating with the Malian army and reporting their movements." She was transported the following day on a motorcycle to Independence Square, where she was shot in front of onlookers.
An unnamed security source characterized the act as "barbaric," while a local official condemned the execution as a "despicable act."
This incident occurs amid ongoing challenges for the ruling military council, which has struggled to manage an armed rebellion lasting over a decade. Recently, the group Support for Islam and Muslims, linked to al-Qaeda, has enforced blockades in the northern region, disrupting fuel supplies, leading to school closures, and affecting agricultural activities.
The murder of Mariam Cisse raises urgent concerns about security in northern Mali, particularly regarding the persistent threats faced by civilians and social media activists.
