The news of the death of 9-year-old girl Sarah has caused widespread shock in France, after she hanged herself in her room due to ongoing bullying at her elementary school.
According to initial investigations, the girl was a victim of daily mockery because of her weight and appearance, as her classmates called her hurtful names like "fat" and *"ugly"* and *"stupid"*, which gradually deteriorated her mental health.

Grieving family and painful testimonies

Sarah's mother stated in a press interview that her daughter had previously expressed suicidal thoughts due to the repeated insults, but she did not expect her to take such a tragic action.
One of her classmates mentioned that she was "cheerful and loved in class," but she faced repeated harassment after school hours on her way home.

Official reactions and widespread national sympathy

Former French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal expressed his deep sadness and condolences to the girl's family, emphasizing that bullying represents "a scourge that destroys self-confidence and can lead to the worst outcomes."
The regional educational authorities also expressed their shock at the incident, while the public prosecutor's office announced the opening of an investigation to determine responsibilities and the precise circumstances of the incident.

Scene of mourning outside the school

The wall of the elementary school where Sarah studied has turned into a symbolic site of mourning and solidarity, where parents and students placed white flowers and touching messages in farewell to the girl.
For his part, the mayor of the town of Sarreguemines, Marc Zingraf, stated that the entire city is "in a state of deep mourning," confirming that "the educational community has lost an innocent child due to the cruelty of words and neglect."

Reopening the discussion on bullying in France

The painful incident has reopened the national discussion on the phenomenon of bullying in French schools, and the necessity to enhance prevention, awareness, and psychological support programs for children.
Civil society organizations have called on the government to implement strict measures to combat cyberbullying and school bullying, and to intensify training for teachers to notice early signs of psychological stress among students.
