Security Warning: New Virus Targets "WhatsApp Web" Users

Cybersecurity experts have warned of a new virus known as SORVEPOTEL, which targets WhatsApp Web users and is characterized by its ability to spread automatically through the contact list and groups.

This virus differs from traditional malware, as it does not only focus on stealing passwords or money, but automatically sends infected files to all contacts as soon as the device is compromised, which may lead to account suspensions by WhatsApp.

The infection usually starts with phishing messages containing a compressed file (ZIP) that appears official, such as a payment receipt or medical report, and hides within it a malicious program that installs the virus upon opening. After that, SORVEPOTEL begins its malicious activity as soon as WhatsApp Web or the desktop application is launched.

Preventive Measures

Experts advise users to disconnect immediately if they notice any unusual behavior in their account, such as sending automatic messages, and to perform a full scan of the device using antivirus software. They emphasize that immediate prevention is essential to prevent the virus from evolving into more complex forms in the future.
