Lionel Messi scored a late goal in the 89th minute, but it was not enough to avoid Inter Miami's loss to Nashville with a score of (2-1) in the second match of the first round of the American playoff series.
Nashville took the lead with two goals in the first half, one from Sam Sturridge via a penalty in the 9th minute, and then Josh Bauer in the 45th minute, before Messi reduced the deficit with a powerful left-footed shot inside the box after a pass from Rodrigo De Paul.
Qualification calculations
Inter Miami had secured the first match at home (3-1) where Messi scored two goals, and will play the decisive third match next Saturday at home to determine the qualifier after both teams tied in wins.
Miami, currently in third place in the Eastern Conference, hopes to avoid a repeat of last season's scenario when they were eliminated by Atlanta despite winning the first match and then losing the next two matches.
If they qualify, they will face the winner of the match between Cincinnati and Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Messi's historic numbers
892 goals
399 assists
1291 total goal contributions
46 titles
8 Ballon d'Or awards
436 Man of the Match awards
