The British government announced today, Friday, the lifting of sanctions imposed on the President of Syria, Ahmad al-Shara, just 24 hours after the United Nations Security Council approved a similar resolution, and days before the anticipated meeting between al-Shara and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington next week.

According to a notice published on the official website of the British government, the name of Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab was also removed from the sanctions lists, after years of being listed due to previous connections related to counter-terrorism efforts and the organizations "ISIS" and "Al-Qaeda".

The Security Council voted yesterday, Thursday, to remove the names of al-Shara and Khattab from the UN sanctions list, with the resolution receiving support from 14 countries, while China abstained from voting. The project was based on the absence of active connections between "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" and the "Al-Qaeda" organization.

This development comes ahead of the scheduled meeting between al-Shara and Trump at the White House next Monday, while no official comment has yet been issued from the Syrian government, coinciding with an official holiday in the country.
