Kit Harington, the British actor renowned for portraying Jon Snow in HBO's Game of Thrones, has voiced his discontent regarding a fan petition calling for the re-production of the series' eighth and final season. He labeled the initiative as irrational and indicative of the adverse effects of social media.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, the 39-year-old actor stated, “I was really angry... How dare you?” He characterized the petition as “a foolish act that could only emerge in the age of social media.”
Challenges During the Final Season
Harington disclosed that the airing of the last season in 2019 coincided with his treatment for addiction. He expressed surprise at the magnitude of the backlash, particularly as approximately 1.8 million individuals signed the petition urging HBO to replace showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss with “competent writers” to revise the ending.
Some fans rationalized their stance by noting the absence of a complete narrative source, as author George R.R. Martin had not yet finished the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, which serves as the basis for the show.
Support from Fellow Cast Members
Harington has previously acknowledged the audience's mixed reactions to the series conclusion, attributing some of the dissatisfaction to the crew's exhaustion during filming. However, he questioned whether a more satisfactory ending could have been achieved. His perspective is shared by fellow cast member Sophie Turner, who deemed the petition “disrespectful,” while Nikolaj Coster-Waldau described it as “disturbing,” emphasizing the challenge of satisfying all viewers in such a large-scale production.
