Iran Faces Ongoing Internet Blackout Amid Protests

The Iranian government has enforced a near-total internet blackout, significantly increasing the country’s digital isolation as protests persist across multiple cities for over two weeks.

Extended Internet Outage

The non-governmental organization "NetBlocks," which monitors global internet freedom, reported that the blackout has now surpassed 60 continuous hours as of Sunday morning. This follows the government's implementation of network restrictions. According to NetBlocks, connectivity levels are currently around 1% of normal, indicating a near-complete suspension of internet services in Iran.

Concerns Over Humanitarian and Security Implications

NetBlocks has cautioned that the internet restrictions present a "direct threat to the safety and well-being of Iranians," particularly during this volatile period. The organization emphasized that the blackout severely limits access to vital information and services for citizens.

Ongoing Demonstrations

The internet disruption coincides with sustained protests, which have been occurring in various cities, including Kermanshah, where demonstrators have blocked major roads to voice their discontent over political and economic issues.

Internet as a Control Mechanism

Analysts suggest that Iranian authorities are employing internet shutdowns as a strategy to curb protest organization and prevent the flow of images and videos to international audiences, a tactic previously utilized during earlier protests.

Prolonged Digital Isolation and Rising Tensions

As the blackout continues without any indication of restoration, concerns are mounting that Iran may face extended digital isolation, coinciding with escalating internal tensions and increasing international scrutiny regarding human rights and freedom of expression.
